Why is Digital Boost doing this?

We believe that the Kickstart scheme can be an important help to small businesses and charities. However to apply directly, employers need to offer 30+ placements, plus robust training and support for the employees, which we know can be challenging. Digital Boost can apply to the scheme on your behalf and simplify the process for you. With our established platform of mentors, training and support, we can also help ensure the employees are fully trained and supported, minimising the time and cost required for you.

What does it cost to participate?

There is no cost. The government will fund the relevant National Minimum Wage for 25 hours a week, associated employer National Insurance contributions and employer minimum automatic enrolment contributions, for six months (total of £5,000). In addition you will receive a one-time fee of £300 to support the setup of taking on the new employee. This funding will be paid by the government to Digital Boost; we will then pass it on to you. Additionally £1500 per placement is allocated to support training the young person to develop their employability skills. This will fund the robust 6 month personalised mentoring and learning journey provided by Digital Boost.

How many placements do I have to offer?

There is no minimum number with Digital Boost. However, job placements must not replace existing or planned vacancies, or cause existing employees, apprentices or contractors to lose work or reduce their working hours.

What kinds of placements can I offer?

This is flexible but we recommend structuring the placement to include at least some time around a focused project or projects, such as launching a marketing campaign or redesigning an app or website. This ensures a quality placement for the employee, and a tangible output that will help your business. It also allows us to better tailor the mentoring and support provided to the project. We’d be happy to discuss potential project types with you.

How does Digital Boost’s programme differ from other Kickstart ‘Gateway’ schemes?

‘Gateways’ are organisations that apply to the scheme on behalf of organisations with less than 30 placements. There are many Gateways available, offering a wide range of support and services. With our proven mentoring, training, and workshops, we believe that Digital Boost offers the best support for the employee, ensuring they gain valuable skills, and deliver tangible benefit to the small business. As a charity, we also have designed this specifically to ensure maximum benefit to you.

  • Quality projects that allow them to learn by doing (while helping grow your business)
  • Training tailored to their specific needs and projects, drawing on more than 12,000 courses from Coursera, Google and FutureLearn, as well as self-guided resources
  • Interactive workshops with experts for further exploration in priority subjects
  • Access to an online peer community managed by Digital Boost, to learn from each other
  • Personalised dashboard to keep track of progress and get recommendations
  • Certificate of completion, issued at the end of the six month employment
